New Forum for I-LEAD Participants

I’ve added a forum to the site so that I-LEAD 2003 Session II participants can meet to discuss ideas, current events, or anything else that floats your boat. The forum has been located at ilead.joeyday.com (my I-LEAD photo album has moved to another location — it’s still on the menu to the left).

I set this all up pretty quickly last night, so some of the settings might still need tweaking. I’m not sure if everything’s working right or not. Let me know if you experience any difficulty registering or adding stuff.

Mom and Dad's Anniversary, 2003

Today is my parents’ wedding anniversary. They’ve been married for 27 years as of today. I would like to take this moment to say, “Happy Anniversary!”

Mom and Dad: I just want to say thank you for the wonderful 24 years in which I have been a part of your family. You guys have always been such a good example for me of a couple committed to one another, and this has made you two of the best parents anyone could hope to have. I love you both so much!

[Incidentally, today is also Janene’s parents’ anniversary. Happy Anniversary to you guys too!]

HomestarRunnerWiki v0.1

I finally got around to installing ’Tavi on my site. I’ve decided the wiki will be a knowledge-base for Homestar Runner.

You can get to the HomestarRunnerWiki at hrwiki.joeyday.com. Feel free to head over to the sandbox and play around with editing a page. Over the next few days I’ll be adding more information about how to format things like bold and italic text, bulleted items, tables, etc.

More About Wikis

SitePoint ran an article today that mentions wikis. The article is about hypertext — what it is, why it was invented, and how understanding it can help you make better webpages.

Here’s the article: “Caffeinate Your Hypertext“.

The article explains (very matter-of-factly) that hypertext and HTML aren’t the same thing. Hypertext is simply a text document that is — as the article puts it — caffeinated. HTML, on the other hand, is a standardized language used in creating hypertext.

I rather enjoyed reading the article, since it introduces several sites that are using hypertext in new and innovative ways. It lists the WikiWikiWeb among many others.

Relative Links for Dummies

I’m feeling extremely stupid right about now. Here I am coding away in strict XHTML, and I just learned how relative links work. :O

Now, I sortof understood how relative links worked before, but I never used them because I never saw the usefulness of them. Relative links are meant to make it easier to move things around, but I always thought people who said that were smoking crack. If you move a page up or down a directory, all your relative links are broken! Consequently, I always preferred using static links for all of my content, like this:

bc. Avatar

However, I just learned that the following relative link does the exact same thing no matter what level the current page is in the heirarchy:

bc. Avatar

What I never knew is that there is a pretty clear distinction between a relative link that starts with a forward slash and one that doesn’t. The starting forward slash tells the browser to start at the root of the site. I can’t believe I never caught onto this before. Sheesh. 😮
